Live acoustic vs DJ: How to choose the right vibe for your wedding music

Planning a wedding means making a million decisions. You’ve probably locked in your venue, and now you’re staring at one of the biggest choices of all; the music. You want good vibes, a packed dance floor, zero awkward silences, and memories that will keep you, your families, and friends talking about for years. But how do you choose between live music (eg. an acoustic duo or solo singer/guitarist), a pro DJ, or a mix of both? Or can you just get away with a Spotify playlist to save some cash?

Let’s look at what each option actually brings to the table so you can find the perfect fit for your day.

The magic of live music

There’s an undeniable magic to live music that a recorded track simply can't copy. Imagine yourself walking down the aisle. Hearing a live acoustic rendition of your favourite song creates an instant, spine-tingling mood. Someone is there to play that song just for you, just the way you want it to be played. How much more special can that get?

Where live music shines:

The ceremony

Soft, romantic live acoustic songs set the perfect tone while your guests arrive and as you walk down the aisle, sign the wedding register, and maybe a more upbeat song as you’re finally announced “husband and wife!”

Cocktail hour & during dinner

Chill live music while everyone is having their first drinks of the night keeps the energy up but lets people actually chat. A musician playing live music over dinner makes your wedding feel much more high end and introduces a level of interaction. It's not a "performance" per se; it just adds a warm ambience to the room that a simple playlist can't replicate.

The main benefit: Live musicians can adapt on the fly. If the flower girl gets stage fright halfway down the aisle, or you need an extra moment to compose yourself or fix your dress, live musicians can flesh out a song with an extra chorus or fill space with an instrumental section. An original recording played from a phone/spotify will either have to be faded out at an arbitrary point in the song when you reach the end of the aisle, or worse - the song will end while you’re only halfway down the aisle

A professional DJ: The ultimate party architect

Once the sun goes down and the reception kicks off, the energy needs to shift. This is where a professional wedding DJ comes in. A great DJ isn't just a human jukebox; they control the entire room's energy.

From classics to modern hits (and anything in between including the super niche) a DJ has a limitless library to keep guests of all ages moving. It’s always my goal to see everyone on the dance floor, even grandma!

Timeline management

A great DJ is highly attuned to the MC - particularly important during the grand entrance of the bridal party, to smooth over the gaps before and after speeches, and build up the hype as the night progresses.

Why not just use Spotify?

With your wedding expenses adding up, it’s completely valid to be looking where to make some cutbacks. It may eventually seem tempting to just plug a phone into the venue's sound system (if they have one, and most don’t - at least not suitable for anything other than speeches) and just use that for your dance floor music. But here are the risks:

1. A playlist means that all the songs will be played from start to finish, even with a crossfade. Enter boredom! We need to keep that energy moving!

2. Spotify can’t read a room. A professional DJ has their eyes on your guests. If the parents are loving 70s disco, they lean into it a bit longer. Once the parents have had a good boogie and people are itching for R&B or some house, the DJ will transition seamlessly. A playlist will only allow you to suddenly skip to the next song (which may be a different tempo or genre altogether) - which can be jarring and can clear a dance floor.

The All-in-One (or Hybrid) setup

If you're struggling to navigate your search for the right musician and/or DJ and are overwhelmed with choices or are considering the potentially complex logistics of having two or three different vendors for each part of the wedding, you don't actually have to. The most popular choice for brides right now is the hybrid package: Live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, transitioning into a DJ/MC for the reception.

This gives you the absolute best of both worlds:

2. The party: Seamless, high-energy mixing from a pro DJ to end the night on a massive high.

It’s also a total win for your budget, because instead of paying a musician for the ceremony, as well paying a separate DJ (and don’t forget - each will have their own travel fee and their own sound system to set up, plus some logistics management due to multiple performance locations at the venue), a hybrid performer that switches from live music to DJ gives you premium, versatile entertainment without the massive price tag. Long story short, one supplier = one fee.

The verdict: What’s best for you?

There’s no right or wrong here. It’s your wedding and your entertainment has to be right for you. 

I’m happy to play any role at your wedding, whether it’s doing just the ceremony/canapes, just DJing the reception, or both (or anything in between) as outlined in my wedding packages.
